NO.
Most hotels will make 1/2 a peso off you.
Considering the Peso was 20/USD a year 1/2 ago.....whats the differance of 1/2 a peso on $100 USD? 50 pesos............a whole Dollar!
Enjoy the Trip, and don't worry about nickels and dimes.

The low dollar to RD$40 and petroleum follows in rise 3:38:00 A.M.
The industralists call to the authorities and the society to reduce to the use of products and goods that depend on petroleum

Santo Domingo. The dollar followed yesterday its tendency towards the loss and its sale in commercial banks and agencies of change was placed in RD$40 by one, a reduction of more than 250 points in only two days.

Nevertheless, this good news is dimmed by the increase that registers the petroleum, whose quotation yielded a little yesterday, when it closed to USS47.86 in the market of New York.

The National Council of the Privada Company (Conep) expressed satisfaction by the reduction of the dollar, and at the same time he suggested to the new authorities and the population in general who initiates a process of reduction of the product consumption that depends on petroleum.

The commercial banks of the country bought the dollar to an average of RD$37.50 by one, whereas the sale made the rounds between RD$39.70 and RD$40.30, for an average of RD$40 by one.

The report of the Central bank indicates that the average of purchase of dollars by the commercial banks and the agencies of change yesterday era of RD$38.48, and the sale to RD$40.45 by one.

"We would have to be thinking about measures of austerity in the consumption of petroleum, simultaneously that we exhorted to all the Dominican ones to that we reduce the consumption of everything what depends on petroleum", it indicates an official notice of the enterprise sector.

The Conep called to eficientizar the transport, to improve the energy provision "so that we do not shoot the petroleum consumption in the country".

Expectations

The economic agents attribute to the stability expectations the reduction of the rate of change, but they stay cautious, because the abrupt reductions of the rate do not stay generally in the long term and soon unexpected rises are registered

Its not going to stay down at these levels.
Don't forget NONE of the electric bills have been paid yet.
The only reason the Peso is down here below 40 is the government has not purchased dollars in a few months to pay ANY bills, hence no power.

It has been said that $RD40/USD may be a realistic longer term goal, certainly not $RD30.

Well Gutter Meat:

My buddy from just returned from Sousa this past Sunday and since he knows that my trip is next month he gave me the lowdown.

Prices are continuing to rise, and unemployment is a problem (big surprise there) The new President was in office before and based on his previous track record the pesos has strengthen against the dollar.

This is a good thing, because it will promote tourism which in turn will bring money to the country and make the world a better place for everyone.

But seriously, these people need to catch some type of break. I would feel better if the new president improved the economy. Then there would be less mafioso hombres out there snatching our cameras and camcorders in effect ruining our vacations.

There is one in every group.

OK Don imagine a country that is stronger and standing on its own two feet financially. Where the populace has employment and the power is not shutting down every 10 minutes.

In a perfect world don't you think that people that want to explore a caribbean island that fits this profile might me more apt to select this utopia as a vacation spot?

Its rhetorical...please don't add your 3 cents.

In a perfect world don't you think that people that want to explore a caribbean island that fits this profile might me more apt to select this utopia as a vacation spot?

Adding my 2-3 cents anyway, I look at it this way. Most people from the US who go to the Caribbean go to AIs. Face it most Americans consider Europe the 3rd world if the bathroom is down the hall rather then in your room. The only appeal the DR has right now as far as AIs go is the lower cost due to the economy right now. Now if prices and wages go up in the DR why would any average American take his family to the DR when he can pay the same to go to a more established AI resort in say St. Thomas or even the creme de la creme in the Caribbean, Atlantis in the Bahamas?

If you are paying top rate prices then you expect a top rate experience. As for exploring sadly most of the AIs don't ever leave the resort and if they do it's in a bus with 20 other tourists. Heck people here have posted about concerns that Haiti is a neighbor when the fighting was going on, what do you think the typical family of 4 from suburbia is thinking about visiting the DR with Haiti next door?

Sorry but I disagree the improved economy and higher prices will kill tourism in the Dominican Republic.

To top it all off most of the money that the family of 4 from suburbia pays to visit an AI doesn't even stay in the host country, it goes back to the offshore owners.

Read the reports from travel agents on the DR, they don't comment on how beautiful the country is, but rather the low prices.

As for the DR ever standing on it's own two feet sadly there are several factors against that.

1. The Dominican Republic has no major natural resource that can be exported. (Amber doesn't really count and you can only grow so many Avacados) As far as Tobacco goes, besides the fact that smoking is so taxed and looked down upon, if we ever trade with Cuba again I doubt you could even find a DR cigar in the states after that.

2. They have a labor force but after 2006 (or is it 2007) the trade restrictions with China get lifted and the Free Zones in the DR will become ghost towns! Even with shipping the longer distance GAP, Levi's, etc. can make their clothing in China for 60% of the cost vs. the DR. They have already started discussing this upcoming "doom's day" on several boards.

3. Even with the new & improved government there will always be corruption, maybe not at the tourist level but the standard way of doing things the Dominican way will never change.

4. Other outside (close by) resources are shared by many other nations. Such as fishing.

I am a liberal but as I grown older I have become a realist. They are an island with no major natural resource, unless someone find oil in them hills they will have to depend on small resources in & out and tourism. Also as I have mentioned with tourism the DR is late to the starting gate compared to other Caribbean islands and the only saving grace is the prices...

PS. Not sure what you meant with "There is one in every group." but please don't expect a comment like "In a perfect world..." to suffice because we know it ain't perfect. I gave several valid reasons why you can't get something for nothing and how it affects the DR. Maybe in the perfect world you can but again it ain't perfect...
