As part of the Dominican payment for Venezuelan oil, Hacienda Minister Vicente Bengoa has signed a deal whereby the Dominican Republic would sent 2,500 tons of liquid sugar to Venezuela in payment for oil and oil products received under the PetroCaribe Agreement. Bengoa signed with Bariven, a branch of Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA). El Nuevo Diario also reported that Bengoa would be signing a similar agreement to ship 10,000 metric tons of black beans, called 'caraotas' in Venezuela, as part of the same payment package.
The liquid sugar is worth US$2,921,820, and the beans are worth US$12.5 million. During the signing, Bengoa thanked Venezuela for its PetroCaribe Plan that he said benefited the Dominican Republic's productive sectors, since the fuel bills were being paid for with goods and services.
