Santiago Archbishop Ramon Benito de la Rosa y Carpio complained yesterday, on occasion of the International Day of the Fight against Drugs, that complicity amongst military, police, judges and politicians is behind the increase in drug trafficking and consumption in the country.
El Caribe newspaper dedicated its editorial to back up the statements of the Catholic prelate and stress that impunity, which it also feels is the result of complicities among the government authorities, is being forged by the high yield of organized crime in the DR. "Drug dealers and other criminals are using the high profits result of their infamous operations to forge ahead and obtain protection from corrupted authorities," states the editorial.
As reported in Hoy, the executive director of Casa Abierta, Radhames de la Rosa said that the country is failing in its fight against drugs because there is not a true political will to bring about changes.
