In what Dominican environmentalists are describing as "environmental crime," government metro contractors have been downing numerous trees as they forge ahead with the construction of the country's first metro line. No provisions have been made to transplant the trees that had provided important shading on city avenues. Hoy newspaper reports that mahogany, mango, flamboyant and almond trees have been mercilessly toppled. The reporter, Ubaldo Guzman says the metro builders have also been ruthless in other areas of the city, including the Mirador Norte Park, the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center and the green area in front of the National Theater.

The OPRET office in charge of the construction of the metro recently announced that the government had invested RD$2.5 billion so far in the construction.
