Central Bank Governor Hector Valdez Albizu has denied being a personal advisor to former Baninter president, Ramon Baez Figueroa. Valdez Albizu said that the report that his consultancy firm had filed at Baez Figueroa's request was a routine economic report they regularly prepared for several clients. Baez Figueroa and Baninter, was just another of his clients, he said. As reported on Monday in Listin Diario, Baez Figueroa said that in February 2003, Valdez Albizu had warned him that the economic measures the Hipolito Mejia government was taking would harm the economy and increase the risks to the banking sector. Baez explained that he hired HVA Consultores & Asociados, a company belonging to the former governor of the Central Bank, in order to secure high level technical and financial advisory services that would permit him to have the adequate analysis that would equip him to take the corresponding administrative decisions at all times.

As reported in Listin Diario, Valdez Albizu added that Listin Diario's own debt, formerly under Baez Figueroa and now under the helm of his father, stands at US$80-US$90 million, around RD$3 billion. Valdez Albizu explained that the collapsed bank, Baninter was intervened by the authorities, together with all its assets that included the newspaper. The Supreme Court of Justice later ordered Listin Diario to be restored to Baez Figueroa's father.
