The collapsed Banco Intercontinental (Baninter) fraud trial was scheduled to continue this morning at the National District Court of First Instance. Diario Libre reports that the case is being tried by judges Antonio Sanchez Mejia, Pilar Rufino Diaz and Giselle Mendez. A 300-person witness list and lengthy documentation suggest many hours of debate and an undetermined number of days to complete the hearings.

Clave Digital reports that on 17 March 2006, former Baninter president and main shareholder Ramon Baez Figueroa who is accused in the fraud case, granted power of attorney to lawyers Julio Cury and Jose Guerrero, authorizing them to negotiate an agreement with the authorities that could release him from having to appear in court and face the charges of fraud and asset laundering against him. The power of attorney expressly indicates that any negotiation to that effect does not imply acceptance of the charges for which he has been indicted.
