The outgoing senators have been busy approving pensions before their term expires on 16 August 16. As reported in Hoy newspaper, they have approved 500 pensions in their last three sessions, including 165 on Tuesday. The pensions range from RD$5,000 to RD$65,000 a month to be paid by taxpayer money. They have also been busy approving hundreds of contracts for sale of government property, and dozens of increases in pensions. Moreover, they rejected a bill that sought to provide 80% of the full earnings for life to anyone who has served as president of either the Senate or the Chamber of Deputies for at least one year, on grounds that this privilege should be granted to all outgoing legislators.
