El Caribe's opinion columnist Miguel Guerrero complains today that the lack of arguments to justify their increase makes the attempts to impose higher taxes on the population more difficult to achieve. One of the most used pretexts is that Dominicans "live like the rich" with the lowest tax rates in the continent. Guerrero believes otherwise. The fact is that the majority of Dominicans experience needs and restrictions. With the exception of a minority, the population is affected by inflation and a process of social reversal. Guerrero also states that it is not true that Dominicans do not pay enough taxes but rather that not all Dominicans fulfill their payment obligations and the authorities have not found any other way to counterbalance the elevated levels of evasion than to impose higher taxes on those who do pay.
