According to Environment Minister Max Puig, the approval of the Protected Areas Law was a closed process that served the interests of private individuals and it is a source of shame for the Dominican Republic that the errors in the coordinates and delimitation of the different areas make the application of the law difficult, as reported by El Caribe. The Minister did not say whether a possible modification of the law would reinstate the original categories to protected areas and indicated that "any modification must respond to an objective and scientific analysis". Proposals from different actors in the environmental field to define the National System of Protected Areas management regulations would serve as a drawing board for the modification of the law. "We want those discussions to be an exercise in democracy", said the minister.
