President Leonel Fernandez arrived in Seoul today on an official three-day visit which has been defined by the South Korean authorities as an opportunity to "build a bridge" between the Caribbean and the Korean peninsula. Fernandez traveled to the South Korean capital from Taiwan and is the first Dominican statesman to visit South Korea since diplomatic relations were established with the DR in 1962, according to a report by El Caribe. South Korean sources indicate that Fernandez will meet with South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun on Friday to discuss bilateral cooperation in terms of trade and technology. They will also discuss the political situation in Northeast Asia, the Caribbean and Central America. They are due to sign treaties aimed at guaranteeing investments and promoting projects through the Cooperation Fund for Economic Development and an academic treaty between universities in both countries. The Dominican President will be presented with an honorary degree from the University of Foreign Studies in Hankuk and on Monday will inaugurate an exhibition by Dominican artist Fernando Urena Rib.
