President Leonel Fernandez has declared 2010 as the "Year of National Economic Reactivation". In Decree No. 933-09 he calls on all sectors to join forces with the government in order to seek economic recovery.
Responding to the call, the president of the Dominican Republic Association of Industries (AIRD), Manuel Diez Cabral expressed his hopes that industry would show a moderate rate of growth in 2010, economic stability and the start of changes in the trade balance. He told Listin Diario that he is optimistic that "more steps will be taken in 2010 to foster a shift towards an economic model that favors an increase in the export of goods and services". He commented that is was a positive sign that the current account deficit was reduced to 9.7% of the Gross Domestic Product in 2008 to 5.2% of GDP in 2009. "Nevertheless, as the Central Bank indicates in its preliminary report on the economy, the improvement was due to the decline in imports, specially petroleum imports, not to an increase in goods and services exports, tourism receipts, remittances or free zone receipts. Revenues in these sectors declined US$1.8 billion," he said. In addition to the structural factors that he says the private and sector public need to confront, he called for fewer internal uncertainties for the productive sector and more respect for the laws and established rules of the game.
