The government hiked up fuel prices over the New Year holidays. On 31 December, Ministry of Industry and Commerce announced an RD$8.20 increase in the price of premium gasoline that now costs RD$160. Regular gasoline was up RD$7.90 and now sells for RD$150.70. Premium diesel was increased RD$7.60 to RD$136.70 and regular diesel goes for RD$131.70. Propane gas was up RD$4.50 to RD$80.80.
Public transporters threatened to raise urban fares by RD$2 and RD$5 and inter-urban fares by RD$10 to compensate for what they described as the "abusive" raise. Transport union leader Juan Hubieres called for the increases to be revoked, saying that the hikes were a violation of Law 112-00 on Hydrocarbons, and a way for the government to increase its revenues at the expense of the poor, the middle class and the transporters.
