El Dia reports that the SUV with the US$4.6 million suspected drug money stashed by Puerto Rican fugitive Jose David Figueroa Agosto was the same armored vehicle used to transport President Uribe of Colombia when he visited the DR in 2008.
Auto Ozama, the Mercedes Benz dealership in the DR, confirmed that the Mercedes Benz was later purchased by the late Colonel Jose Amado Gonzalez. The dealership said that the vehicle had been imported in 2003. Eduardo Grullon, son of Alejandro Grullon (leading stockholder of Banco Popular Dominicano) purchased the exoneration from deputy Ramon Arcangel Santana Ramirez. In March 2008, the vehicle was assigned to the service of the President of Colombia when it was still owned by Eduardo Grullon. Auto Ozama says that on 29 July 2008, it received the vehicle as a down payment towards a Mercedes S500 by Grullon. Afterwards, the vehicle was sold to Sebastian de Gaudenci on 20 March 2009. And then on 19 August 2009, De Gaudenci sold the G500 to late police officer Jose Amado Gonzalez Gonzalez. A month later, El Dia reported that the authorities confiscated the vehicle with US$4.6 million inside, while pursuing drug trafficker Jose Figueroa Agosto. Investigations by the authorities indicate that while Gonzalez Gonzalez made the purchase, the true owner of the vehicle was Figueroa Agosto, who used it in his operations.
President Alvaro Uribe visited the DR in March 2008 to attend the Rio Group Summit deliberations.
