Evangelical preacher Ezequiel Molina has suggested legalizing drug trafficking in a new bid to reduce its hold on Dominican society. The preacher was addressing a packed congregation at the Olympic Stadium on 1 January and speculated that the legalization of drug trafficking could prevent bloodshed and reduce crime. "And I ask and you will too, what are we going to do, what is the world going to do when none of the judges dares to sentence a capo. The judges are afraid of the capos," he said. He said that the judges have families and don't have protection. He then said it would be better to legalize drugs. He commented that legalization would not be in the better interest of the drug traffickers because there would be a decline in prices and business profitability. He said when he travels abroad he reads of the same problems with other names. He said that the war on drug trafficking was the most bloody and prolonged war we have known.
Marino Vinicio Castillo, legal advisor to the President on drug trafficking, and Leopoldo Diaz, president of Hogares Crea, rejected the proposal. They told Listin Diario that they believed that this would just lead to an increase in drug consumption in the country.
