The Emergency Operations Center (COE) reported 28 deaths over the New Year long weekend. Of these, 26 died in traffic accidents and 2 of alcohol poisoning, according to COE director General Juan Manuel Mendez. A further 237 people were involved in traffic accidents, 58 suffered the effects of alcohol poisoning and 15 were victims of food poisoning. The COE said that 144 motorcycles were involved in the traffic accidents. Provinces where deaths were reported were: National District, Province of Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macoris, Hato Mayor, Azua, San Cristobal, Espaillat (Moca), Valverde (Mao), Samana, Monte Plata, El Seibo, La Altagracia (Higuey), La Vega, Sanchez Ramirez (Cotui) and Puerto Plata, as reported in today's Diario Libre.
