The National Drug Control Department has suspended its director of planning and operations, Colonel Miguel Sanchez Martinez, and the head of DNCD services at La Romana Airport, Colonel Manuel Diaz Medina, following initial investigations into their links to the murder of former Police colonel Jose Amado Gonzalez Gonzalez. Gonzalez Gonzalez was murdered on 24 December and his death is linked to fugitive drug trafficker Jose Figueroa Agosto.
District Attorney Alejandro Moscoso Segarra said that the officers have been suspended while investigations are ongoing, as reported in El Dia.
Colonel Sanchez started working at the DNCD shortly after Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo's appointment. Sanchez had worked with Gonzalez Gonzalez as part of the Presidency military assistance corps from 2000 to 2004. Both Sanchez and Medina arrived at the Gonzalez Gonzalez murder scene shortly after the event.
Presidential narcotics advisor, lawyer Marino Vinicio Castillo says that from 2000 to 2004 colonels Miguel Sanchez Martinez and the late Jose Amado Gonzalez Gonzalez were members of the Presidency military assistance corps, and that after 2004 they moved on to "sensitive jobs" in the new administration.
