The new authorities at the State Electricity Corporation (CDEEE) say that by 2015 power theft should be a thing of the past. The state power sector, now headed by businessman Celso Marranzini, plans to gradually add more paying consumers to reduce losses, as reported in El Dia. The plan is for the number of customers of the power distribution companies to increase from 1,350,000 in 2009 to 1,650,000 in 2010, and then to 2 million in 2012, and then to 2,310,000 by 2015.
Another goal is to increase the number of customers receiving power 24 hours a day from 44% now to 48% by 2010, 68% by 2012 and 100% by 2015. Marranzini says this is possible through investing in the electric grid and with good management. "We will achieve this by managing. One of the greater problems that this sector has suffered is the lack of planning in the medium and long term and fulfillment of the plans," he said.
He said that last year the CDEE invested US$80 million in the sector. He plans to invest US$150 million this year. The funds have been approved by the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank. The plan is to invest an additional US$150 million in 2011 and another US$100 million in 2012.
Marranzini says that in 2009 peak demand was 1,800 megawatts. Peak demand for 2010 is estimated to increase to 2,120 megawatts. By 2012 peak demand should be at 2,250 Mw and by 2015 at 2,340 Mw. He expects 600 megawatts of new generation capacity to be ready by 2015.
