Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez said that over the last 3 years, the government spent RD$1.5 billion on providing health services for Haitians who visit or reside in the DR. Almost all Haitians requiring public health services are in the country illegally. Rojas said that this number only takes into account some of the services that the Haitians receive in Dominican hospitals and clinics. Hoy reports on the minister's response to a story on the suspect business of organized tours bringing women to give birth in Dominican hospitals. He said that illegal Haitians receive free medical consultations, emergency treatment, hospitalization services, surgery and clinical lab tests in addition to giving birth. He said that Haitian women and their children are also vaccinated at Dominican public hospitals without being affiliated to any health provider or insurance plan. He said that in the southern, eastern and border cities, public hospitals treat more Haitians than Dominicans. He mentioned specific public hospitals: Dr. Antonio Musa in San Pedro, Nuestra Senora de la Altagracia in Higuey, and Francisco Gonzalvo in La Romana that treat large Haitian populations. Also Melenciano General Hospital in Jimani, Jaime Mota in Barahona, Elio Fiallo in Pedernales, San Bartolome in Neiba and Dajabon hospital.
He called for more migration controls to reduce the flow of Haitians coming to receive the free medical services.
