250 people were killed in drug-related incidents in the past 10 months, reports Clave newspaper. This is 34% of the total of 732 crime-related deaths in 2009. The newspaper also says that the authorities confiscated 5,976 kilos of narcotics, including 3,406 kilos of cocaine, 1405 of marijuana and 40 kilos of heroin in 2009. More than 24,000 people were arrested in drug investigations. Foreigners arrested in narcotics cases were: 405 Haitians, 27 Colombians, 24 Americans, 12 Spaniards, 11 Dutch, 11 Puerto Ricans, 11 Canadians, 7 Venezuelans, 6 French and 5 Italians. 25.4% of the drug arrests took place in the province of Santo Domingo, followed by 21.5% in the National District (central Santo Domingo). 10.9% took place in Santiago, 8.6% in La Altagracia (Higuey and Punta Cana), 8.3% San Cristobal, 5.7% in Peravia, 4.2% in San Pedro and 4.4% in La Romana.
In drug-related operations the DNCD confiscated 1,342 motorcycles, 186 cars, 112 SUVs, 14 jeeps, 32 pick ups, 6 trucks, 19 outboard motors, 4 airplanes and 4 boats.
In jails alone, 3,520 portions of drugs were confiscated.
Prosecutor General statistics report 340 victims of homicides directly related to crime in 2009.
The newspaper says that approximately RD$300 million in cash was confiscated from suspected drug traffickers. This includes RD$48 million, US$5.7 million and 828,000 euros. Also, 10,000 Canadian dollars, 323,000 Venezuelan bolivars, 2.6 million Colombian pesos, 34,000 Haitian gourdes and 48,000 Swiss francs.
