Sosua is an hour and a hald from STI by car. There are also busses that run from there. It is much better than spending a long layover in Miami

Ben,
Check out flights into Santo Domingo as well as Santiago. There is a bus that runs from both cities to Sosua. Also, I have found that car rental is not all that expensive, as long has you don't mind driving amongst some of the crazy drivers. Good to see you coming home, and I sure hope you enjoy your time in Sosua!

Can you get a free military flight into San Juan PR. If so......it is a cheap little jump over to DR. That used to be available. Not sure if that is the case anymore.

Check out these fares, both found on kayak.com

From AUS --> SDQ. Layover in San Juan. $468 R/T

Advice: take a $300 peso bus from Santo Domingo to Sosua. Otherwise you can get a taxi for $100 USD.

I just checked Travelocity and found a trip for $572.80. This itinerary will take you from Austin to Puerto Plata by way of Las Vegas and Miami in around 19 hours. The return is from Santiago through Miami in just 10 hours.

When you search this trip in Travelocity, click "multi-city". As the first trip, write in AUS to POP and the second one, STI to AUS. Decline the insurance and you'll get the $572.80 fare.

If you decide to go this route, let me know it.
