India's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Shashi Tharoor is expected in the DR for a 3-day visit from 23 to 26 January. Tharoor will meet with President Leonel Fernandez and his Dominican counterpart Carlos Morales Troncoso. His agenda includes the signing of trade and cooperation agreements, climate change, United Nations reform, drug trafficking and international terrorism.
Agreements will also be signed for the installation of a Center for Excellence in Information Technologies, for promotion and reciprocal protection of investments, to reduce double taxation and tax evasion, and for cooperation and mutual judicial assistance.
The visit is a follow up to Minister Morales Troncoso's 2006 trip to India.
India and the DR established diplomatic relations in 1999. Trade has increased 300% since 2005, following the opening of the Dominican Embassy in New Delhi under Ambassador Hans Dannenberg.
The Dominican Embassy in India has worked to promote the DR as a destination in technological and pharmaceutical areas, as well as to expand education programs and trade.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Relations, 14 Indian companies are operating in the country, in areas including apparel, data processing, information technology, steel and metals.
In 2006 Shashi Tharoor was a candidate for the post of United Nations secretary general, losing to Ban Ki-moon. Prior to his appointment as foreign relations minister of India, he was Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information at the United Nations.
