A further 40 families will be removed from the banks of the Ozama River in the Gualey sector of the National District, as a result of works on the Ecological Avenue by the Transport Reorganization Office (Opret). According to local residents, the authorities began work last week. On the job site, heavy equipment is working on the fill for what will be the new roadbed that will run alongside the Ozama and Isabela rivers. In December, 24 families were obliged to sell their houses in order to facilitate the work being done by Opret.
The institution is paying between RD$130,000, RD$160,000 and RD$300,000 to the affected families. Some of the residents affected by the works said that they were sad about the sale of their humble abodes. Others were happy that they were pressured to sell their houses by Opret, because otherwise they would have been evicted without compensation. According to those affected by the displacement, last month they were called into the Opret offices and each family was given a check. The amount varied according to the size and condition of each house.
