CAFTA has been negative for DR

Minister of Industry and Commerce Jose Ramon Fadul has cast doubt upon the abilities of the Dominican negotiators during the lead-up to the DR-CAFTA agreement. He said that the free trade treaty has done nothing to benefit local producers, and that for every ten items from Central America, Dominican producers sell just one in Central America. He did say that consumers have benefited from the large amount of products from Central America, but he said, the unequal proportion is a threat to local production. Citing a lack of experience among the 1996-2000 negotiators, Fadul called on local industrialists to come up with suggestions on how to adjust the situation and allow for a more equitable competition with Central American counterparts.
