Former National District prosecutor Juan Esteban Olivero Feliz, who represents Noe Martin Sterling Villalon, accused of participation in the murder of 7 Colombian drug traffickers in Paya, Bani on 4 August 2008, is questioning the actions of state prosecutors.
As reported in El Caribe on 9 January, he said that several people are being protected in the investigation carried out by the Prosecutor General. He said the officers who worked on the case are discredited.
Olivero says he agrees with statements by presidential narcotics advisor Marino Vinicio Castillo (Vincho) and Peravia senator Wilton Guerrero that the authorities are covering up for several people who are responsible for the killings in Paya, Bani. He suspects that the judge hearing the case, Roman Berroa Hiciano, will not be able to administer justice in an adequate way and will have to fry the process. He said the prosecutors had violated procedures and secured a large part of the evidence in an irregular manner. He said that the investigation started out badly because it was launched by the Bani prosecutor and several National Drug Control Department officers "who are now under investigation".
As reported in El Caribe, 27 people are being investigated in connection with the Paya killings, including several Navy officers. After the incident, Peravia senator Wilton Guerrero accused the local authorities of complicity with drug traffickers. This led to the transfer of the chief of police in the area, General Hilario Gonzalez. At the time, Guerrero also criticized the performance of the general prosecutor Radhames Jimenez.
