The General who arrested Manuel Emilio Mesa Beltre "El Gringo" has been removed from his post as Coordinator of the Barrio Seguro Program. General Miguel de la Cruz Reyna's dismissal was made on the grounds that he has not been efficient in combating crime. Colonel Julian Zapata Marinez has been appointed to replace him.
Beltre will reportedly be extradited to the US on drug trafficking charges. As reported in Diario Libre, "El Gringo" Beltre is described as the leader of drug trafficking activities in the sectors under Programa Barrio Seguro. He was arrested last year and sent to jail at Najayo where he is being held in a cell for prisoners awaiting extradition.
Deputy Police chief Major General Henry Peralta praised the officer's work during the five months he was in charge of the program, which coincided with the change in command to General Rosado Mateo Rosario at the DNCD. Peralta said that during the time he was in post he managed to reduce crime and achieved close community acceptance, as reported in Diario Libre.
"We are alone, we are left without security. That man was the only one who really attacked drug trafficking in those barrios," Amauri Brito, a pastor in the Simon Bolivar neighborhood told Diario Libre. The newspaper reports that 2 days before General de la Cruz was removed, he announced the arrest of brothers Horlyn Javier and Escarlin Javier Almanzar Reyes, said to be members of a gang led by Flaco Sued, who is being sought by the Police for the murder of Sandy Daniel Martinez Gomez (Lambro) and for being a partner of El Gringo. The Almanzar Reyes brothers were arrested in La Cienega, a slum neighborhood.
