On Friday night the surprising Gigantes del Cibao, the round robin leaders at 7-3, welcomed the Toros del Este into the new "Valley of Death", the Julian Javier Stadium in San Francisco de Macoris. Unfortunately, the Toros came prepared and pounded out a surprising 9-2 win. First baseman Yurandel de Caster had a triple, a double and 2 singles to lead the assault on the Gigantes pitching staff.
Meanwhile, in Santo Domingo, "Eternal Rivals" Licey and Escogido were doing battle. Licey won handily, 9-1, with wonderful pitching from Ramon Ortiz and four hits from Erick Aybar. As a result of Friday's action the Gigantes maintained their 2-game lead over the other 3 teams who were now at 5-6.
On Saturday, the Gigantes returned to their winning ways, defeating the Tigres del Licey 8-4, with 5-5 hitting by Lucas Montero. The Leones del Escogido defeated the Toros del Este, 3-1, and climbed into second position by themselves.
In Sunday's action the Leones consolidated their second place position, defeating the Toros del Este in the venerable Estadio Quisqueya, by a score of 7-1. The offense was led by Keven Barker's 4 hits, including a homerun and 2 doubles. The good hitting backed up good pitching by Heath Phillips and Nelson Figueroa. Meanwhile, in the new "Death Valley" the Gigantes del Cibao took on the feisty Tigres del Licey. It was a very tight game. Standout pitching by Brandon Duckworth and Jason Standridge allowed just one run for each team until the tenth inning, when the Gigantes filled the bases on an error, a sacrifice bunt and another error and an intentional walk. Wilson Valdez then got the winning hit and left the Tigres to go and find their bus back to Santo Domingo.
