Today's editorial in El Caribe newspaper criticizes the commission that is investigating Puerto Rican drug trafficking fugitive Jose David Figueroa Agosto for the entertainment slant that is being given to the story. "The stories about this sinister character's sexual excesses will serve as morbid pleasures but do not contribute to the clarification of this unprecedented case of blatant impunity and protection that he enjoyed and still enjoys," says the writer. The editorialist goes on to say that the investigation should instead concentrate on reaching conclusions and levying exemplary penalties on the networks and complicities the drug trafficking ring has had for years.
Police chief Rafael Guillermo Guzman Fermin, National Drug Control Department chief General Rolando Rosado Mateo, the head of the National Department of Investigation for the Persecution of Drug Trafficking and Complex Crimes Frank Soto and assistant district prosecutor Bienvenido Fabian Melo held a 3-hour press conference yesterday to provide details on the findings in the case against Figueroa Agosto. They referred to him as "the chameleon" for having taken on multiple identities. Figueroa Agosto has 8 sentences against him in Puerto Rico for a total of 209 years imprisonment, including one 99-year sentence for murder.
The commission says that Figueroa Agosto is responsible for the death of Jose Amado Gonzalez, because the latter had reported him to the DNCD. The commission says that this occurred after Sobeida Felix Morel, offended because Gonzalez had called her a prostitute, showed the former colonel a video showing his wife engaging in a sexual act with Figueroa Agosto.
During a presentation to the press at the Santo Domingo Melia Hotel yesterday, the commission screened the video in which Figueroa and Gonzalez's wife, Madelin Bernard Pena are seen having sex.
The commission says that this situation caused a rift between Gonzalez, who was a former close aide of Figueroa. El Caribe reports that Gonzalez's widow Madelin Bernard Pena went missing after being discharged from the Clinica Abreu where she was hospitalized for gunshot wounds received on 24 December during the attack that killed her husband.
As reported in El Caribe, during the event, journalists Osvaldo Santana of CDN and Juan Bolivar Diaz of Teleantillas demanded that the investigating commission reveal more concrete findings because those that had been provided were already known.
