Amidst chaos and struggles with police units, public transport drivers on several routes serviced by the CNTU transport union halted services on 14 of the 17 routes that cover public transport in the city of Santiago. The work stoppage was in protest at the continued fuel price increases. CNTU leader Juan Marte told reporters that the strike, a 12-hour halt in service, was successful but he criticized the fact that the National Police had arrested more than 80 members of the transport union. He claimed that many drivers were "severely beaten" by the Police. School bus services were halted and so were taxi services by units belonging to the union.
