Presidential Press director Rafael Nunez revealed that US President Barack Obama called President Leonel Fernandez at around 9pm yesterday to discuss recovery plans for Haiti in the immediate, medium and long term. The Presidents agreed that the DR is the ideal bridge for the aid that needs to get to Haiti.
Fernandez told Obama about an agreement signed with Haitian President Rene Preval yesterday afternoon and stressed the DR's willingness to serve as an aid operations base. President Obama seemed deeply worried about the situation in Haiti, as mentioned on most international newscasts as well, and he told President Fernandez about the US government's interest in making an effective contribution towards Haiti's recovery.
Nunez also said that Spain's Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega called Fernandez to confirm her country's willingness to help in medium and long-term recovery efforts. The Spanish Deputy PM also confirmed the European Union's intention to help with recovery efforts and support for the Haitian people. She added that she would be traveling to the Dominican Republic this Tuesday to meet with President Fernandez and Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive.
