Despite all the international community's good intentions, the chaos prevalent in Haiti also is affecting air operations, making the arrival of aid even more disorganized.
France, Spain, the UK, Canada, Japan, China, Indonesia, Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela and other countries have sent equipment for search and rescue operations as well as first aid supplies and food to help the earthquake victims. Yesterday morning 10 aircraft were circling the airport, waiting for a chance to land. According to CNN, some of them even called the flight controllers to tell them that they were running out of fuel. Some flights were diverted to Santo Domingo, including one from Panama with 32 specialists and 34 tons of supplies. Because of this situation, President Fernandez informed officials in Haiti that Dominican airports were at their disposal. In the Dominican Republic, flight operations are primarily being handled at Las Americas International Airport and the smaller La Isabela (Higuero) International Airport, the San Isidro Military Air Base, Puerto Plata International Airport (Gregorio Luperon), Maria Montez in Barahona, and the Cibao International Airport in Santiago.
