Dozens of Haitians flocked to the grounds of the Haitian embassy in the Dominican Republic yesterday looking for assurances that they would be allowed to return after visiting their families in Haiti whose capital was devastated by an earthquake that registered 7.0 on the Richter scale last Tuesday.
Meanwhile, at the main bus terminal in Santo Domingo serving the border town of Jimani, a bus left every 25 minutes full of Haitians who paid RD$360 for the trip and they were bringing in additional vehicles in response to the extra demand. Radhames Suarez, in charge of the bus stop, reported that normally they send out 15 buses a day, every 40 minutes. By midday yesterday they had already authorized 19 buses, every 25 minutes. Precisely yesterday, the Dominican government ordered special facilities for Haitians who reside in the country without legal status, or who are in the process of legalizing their status, to travel to Port-au-Prince and come back without experiencing difficulties.
"We have given special facilities to students who are here, many of them in the process of getting their residence; we have given them free entry. We are also allowing all people who have problems to go and come back without worrying about their migratory status", declared Migration director Sigfrido Pared Perez. Yesterday, the Haitian ambassador in the DR, Fritz Cineas, appealed to the sensibilities of the Dominican authorities, asking them to ease cross-frontier movement.
