Yesterday the international community announced its US$400 million response plan for earthquake-stricken Haiti, consisting of humanitarian aid, including food and medicines. Less than two days after thousands died in the rubble, Haiti has received US$347,175,000 and EUR6,000,000 to ease the damage caused by the disaster suffered by the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The largest donors were the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank and the United States, each sending US$100 million in emergency aid to Haiti. The United Nations, the British government and Brazil sent US$10 million. Brazil sent 14 tons of food and placed 8 aircraft at the authorities' disposal for moving priority cargo of food, water and medicines.
Haiti expects to receive US$8 million from the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (CCRIF) within two weeks. Others that donated US$5 million were Japan and Canada, telecommunications company Digicel and an Irish communications company. Also India, Morocco, South Korea, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and the American Red Cross, as well as Hollywood's most famous couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and US media magnate Ted Turner, who each contributed a million dollars.
Likewise, the Barbados-based Caribbean Development Bank gave US$700,000, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) announced an immediate donation of US$200,000, cyclist Lance Armstrong, the 7-time winner of the Tour de France, gave US$250,000 and US company Kraft Foods sent US$25,000. The destroyed nation also received help from the European Union, which announced an initial aid package of EUR3 million. Meanwhile the Netherlands and Germany contributed EUR2 million and EUR1 million respectively.
