The Dominican Republic is the location for today's preparatory meeting for a World Summit for Haiti in the presence of Spanish deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega and European Union president Belgian Prime Minister Herman van Rompuy. The meeting is scheduled to start at the Presidential Palace at 11am.
Haitian President Rene Preval, representatives of the United States, Canadian and Brazilian governments and ambassadors from Latin American countries will attend the meeting. Foreign Minister Peter Kent is representing Canada.
President Leonel Fernandez has convened the representatives of multilateral organizations such as the United Nations, the World Bank, the Caribbean Community, the Inter-American Development Bank and other regional cooperation organizations. The central issue that will be discussed is short and medium-term international aid for Haiti after the 12 January earthquake. Presidents Fernandez and Preval and Haitian Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive have already discussed the general guidelines.
