"Miracles" and violence alternated in Haiti over the weekend, with the discovery, 5 days after the earthquake, of more survivors among the ruins of Port-au-Prince where pillaging is increasing and survivors wander around hungry under the sun. A Danish member of Minustah was pulled from the ruins of the UN building 5 days after the quake. In the dawn hours, rescue workers had retrieved 3 people from the remains of a supermarket, according to Hoy, a 7-year old girl, a man of 34 and a woman of 50 who were fortunate enough to have been trapped surrounded by food. A fourth person was also there, waiting to be dug out. They are just some of the 70 survivors who were found by the 43 rescue teams that have 1,739 people hard at work.
The true magnitude of the disaster is slowly coming to light. In Leogane, 17 kilometers to the west of Port-au-Prince and at the epicenter of the quake, 90% of buildings were destroyed. "This is the true epicenter of the earthquake, and many, many people died," said David Orr of the United Nations.
