Life goes on in the Dominican Republic. The Winter League Baseball Championship, dedicated to the three Rojas Alou brothers is now going into the final stages, but not without some controversy.
On Friday night the Tigres del Licey defeated the Toros del Este, 7-1 to at least have a chance of making the finals. Anderson Hernandez had 3 hits in the Tigres attack, and Jason Standridge pitched 6 fine innings of shutout baseball to lead the Tigres victory.
In Santo Domingo, the Leones del Escogido beat up on the reserve team of the Gigantes del Cibao, 10-1. With most of the Gigantes' stars resting for the finals, Edward Valdez, who said he was staying for the finals, won his third game of the round-robin stage of the tournament. On Saturday night, things got out of hand as the Tigres fell 10-6 to the Gigantes and were thereby eliminated from the finals. During the game Jose Offerman, a former big-league infielder, slugged umpire Dan Rayburn after Rayburn ejected Offerman. Offerman was protesting the ejection of his catcher Ronny Paulino who was tossed for protesting balls and strikes. Previously, the umpires had ejected pitcher Denny Bautista for throwing too many balls too close to the opposing players.
In the other game, the Leones del Escogido defeated the feisty Toros, 4-3, in a hard fought game in La Romana. The Toros took a 3-1 lead but could not hold it in the face of the solid hitting by Argenis Reyes and Joaquin Arias. This is Escogido's first trip to the finals since 2002-2003.
