Merengue star Rubby Perez has provided a house in Alma Rosa to house Haitian patients recovering from surgery at the Dario Contreras Trauma Hospital in Santo Domingo. The public hospital has been stretched to the limit by patients seeking surgery, and one of the problems has been that the patients have nowhere to go afterwards. The house has space for 34 patients. Yesterday, Hospital director Dr. Hector Maceo Quezada complained that dozens of Haitians were trying to set up businesses in the hospital and environs to profit from the influx. As reported in Hoy, he estimated that more than 3,000 Haitians had visited the center, despite just 140 being admitted and 3 have since died. He said he would send a daily list with the names of the Haitians who are admitted and their status to the Embassy of Haiti so that relatives can seek the information there and not at the hospital.
"We are prepared to deal with tragedies, but the problem is that the hospital does not have the space. We operate and then it fills up again," said Dr. Uvinas Renville. Dr. Quezada told Diario Libre that there are now more Haitian than Dominican patients at the hospital and that the hospital would have to be militarized to restore order.
Meanwhile, Diario Libre reports that the first patients to recover at hospitals on the border are encountering the same problem. The hospital needs the beds for others but they do not know where to send these newly homeless people. The General Melenciano Hospital in Jimani has treated more than 1,200 patients since Wednesday. Doctors at the hospital say they do not expect the number of patients to increase, as the probability of finding survivors is now minimal.
