The Dominican Navy is moving hundreds of tons of humanitarian supplies to Haiti, using the patrol boat Capotillo PM-204 that left the port of Cabo Rojo on the southwestern coast of the Dominican Republic bound for Jacmel, on Haiti's south coast. According to Navy sources, the vessel also carried 47 aid volunteers, 45 French and 2 Canadians, members of Fire Departments and French International Corps for Emergency Assistance. They are carrying medical supplies and other aid. The Navy said that this group would set up a hospital for the earthquake victims.
As evening fell the Navy reported that the Capotillo, the Coast Guard ships Bellatrix, Canopus and Orion (GC-106, GC-107 and GC-109) as well as fast ship Atria (LR-157) had carried 93.7 tons of humanitarian aid to Haiti. The aid was received by members of British aid agency Save the Children, according to Hoy newspaper. An important point made by the Navy was that their specialists have assessed the condition of the wharf at Jacmel and found it had not suffered serious damages and could be used by ships and barges. Cabo Rojo has become the collection center for aid being sent to Jacmel. Naval chief of staff Vice-Admiral Homero Luis Lajara Sola has set up his command center there and is personally directing the maritime humanitarian aid operations.
