Hacienda Minister Vicente Bengoa is optimistic that international organizations will reimburse the Dominican Republic for its expenses in assisting Haiti after last week's devastating earthquake. Bengoa said that the European Union ambassador as well as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that they would support the reimbursement of the help offered to Haiti as long as it was well documented and invoiced.
The minister also announced that last Friday the government made available RD$231 million to several state institutions to help Haiti. This included RD$64 million to the Ministry of Public Health, but Bengoa said that he had increased this allocation to RD$124 million due to the large number of wounded Haitians they were treating.
Bengoa also mentioned that Venezuela had sent a million gallons of fuels for use in Haiti. The donation, which consists of 546,000 gallons of gasoline, 446,000 gallons of diesel and 8,000 gallons of avtur (jet fuel) will arrive at the Dominican Refinery tomorrow, and will be sent on to Haiti in tanker trucks.
