The tragic earthquake that destroyed the Haitian capital led Stephanie Hernandez to a reunion with her father, who she had not seen for 20 years. The young woman of Dominican origin, who suffered serious spinal injuries, was one of 162 patients who were transferred from Haiti to the Dario Contreras Hospital.
Upon her arrival at the hospital, Stephanie's mother Mireya Hernandez, who is Haitian, told the girl's father what had happened to his daughter and asked him to help get blood for her, and this led to the reunion. Stephanie is 23 and left the DR with her mother and sister when she was just 3 years old. Her case came to light after the media realized that a Dominican girl who needed a special apparatus in order to recover the use of her arms and legs was among the injured. The apparatus costs more than RD$100,000, which the family cannot afford.
The money was finally obtained through a loan, according to her mother, from a person who wished to remain anonymous and Stephanie will be operated on today. Her father, Joaquin, a private in the National Police, is assigned to the force's Intelligence unit. He told reporters that he kept in contact with his daughters but his economic situation prevented him from visiting them.
