The lack of blood and medications at Jimani's General Melenciano Hospital and others along the frontier, affects emergency care and professional treatment for the injured and wounded from the earthquake that affected the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince.
Dominican Medical Association (CMD) president Senen Caba asked Haitian residents in the Dominican Republic to go to branches of the Dominican Red Cross and donate blood for the earthquake victims. The Dario Contreras Hospital in Santo Domingo and those located along the frontier began to be freed up from the overcrowding of earthquake survivor patients as they were discharged and sent to special shelters until they can return to Haiti.
A total of 55 Haitian children were discharged from the trauma hospital and transferred to 2 shelters operated by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), NGOs, churches and individuals and where they will be taken care of until they are well enough to go home. Public Health Minister Bautista Rojas Gomez said that the shelters have the capacity to house dozens of people, and he said he had ordered the delivery of medicines and health personnel to operate them.
