Around 700 Dominicans have been repatriated by the Dominican embassy in Haiti, after they lost everything during the earthquake that devastated the Haitian capital last Tuesday, 12 January. Most have returned by land on buses sent by the Metropolitan Office of Bus Services (OMSA), while the wounded were transferred in helicopters. Just yesterday, the Embassy had around 100 Dominicans ready to return to the country, according to a report filed by e-mail by the Minister-Counselor of the Embassy, Pastor Vasquez. Some of these, according to Vasquez, have light injuries. Among those repatriated are entire families that lost their homes, some of them of mixed nationalities, which is to say one parent Dominican and one parent Haitian. According to Vasquez, in these cases, some investigations are done and the complete family is sent "because we have precise instructions to keep the families united."
The majority of those repatriated this week lived in cities further west, such as Carrefour, Leogane, Miragoave and Petit Goave. "At first we evacuated those who lived closer, such as in Port-au-Prince, Petionville, Tabarre, Kenskoff and La Plaine, because they could get to the embassy quicker", reported Vasquez, as reported in Diario Libre. Every Dominican who is sent home is registered and the list is then sent to the Dominican Foreign Relations Ministry. As of now, the authorities have not given even an approximate number of Dominicans who may have died in the earthquake.
