update: the $2 LaVaina calling card is only giving 24 mins. cell phone calls!! No longer 50mins when first came out!! But 24mins for $2 is still good!! There is a new out there now Oro Solido.. Havent tried it yet!!

When you first dial in, it says the card is good for 3 hours and 41 minutes, etc....but with all that 3 minute rounding bull shit and taxes, it lasts about 1.5 hours.

Be careful when using calling cards. This is another system set up similar to the car buying/leasing disaster. There are all these variables: connection fee, rounding, tax, weekly or semi-monthly charges, etc. Most rates that you see advertised are for house phones. Cell phone charges to DR or anywhere else are much more expensive. No bullshit, if you are calling often, it's worth it to have a line installed in her house. But careful, the whole freaking town will be making calls on her phone. Anyway, I've learned the hard way with these cards. You have to read the fine print. I use www.uniontelecard.com often. Don't give up searching the net for better deals. Also, you have to consider reliability. I have had many problems with some carriers.

I use STI, which was giving me 4 cents a minute when I used to call my ex-novia, but that was on her house phone. I noticed my most recent card burning fast and I went to the website to check the rates and it seems like the rate is much higher for calling a Dominican cell phone - 10 cents a minute!!!! That is more than double the house rate. I need to confirm this tomorrow because the office is closed after 9 pm. This would be fucked up though. I'm gonna have to check out cards that have better rates for cell phones if this is in fact the case.

Like I said....the discount is offered at the local bodega near where I live on select phone cards to anyone I guess...I just know that I buy a lot of these weekly for my communication needs back to the island, etc. I think it's damn good at about 4.4 cents a minute. I tried so many in my short life....another one was Black Diamond...i believe by the same company....the phone card industry is dominated by two companies alone that account for about 90% of the cards you see out there except that they are just in different packaging. I've been lucky by giving these other smaller companies a try.

This card is BS...I just bought one last night. I am calling from cell to cell, when I first went in I was told I had 50 minutes (5 bucks)....I have spoken a grand total of 10 minutes to a cell and 2 minutes to a landline and I have a bit less than $2 left. $3 for about 11 cell min...I am better off dialing directly. They claim 150 minutes for $5....NOT!

I called uniontelecard and they tell me the best they have for cellular to cellular is 17 cents/min....just a bit better than dialing directly from my phone.

Will keep looking....

The best deal I can think of is hampered by the cost of DSL or cable internet in the DR.

Vonage unlimited service costs $24.99/ month. Lets say for example that you live in NYC they would give you a NYC tel #, or any US # that you ask for.. Since all their calls are routed over the internet, all calls made from a phone connected to that box would be as if coming frm New York or Florida etc. no matter where in the world the box was connected. So if you made a trip to Hong Kong and connected the box to a broadband network there and called New York it would be the same as a local call in NY. The same would apply in the DR.

As I said, the only drawback would be the cost of the broadband service in the DR. In addition eventually your chica might realise that she is sitting on a gold mine and might decide to open a call center from her home.

This is something that someone like Jimmy might look into, since he is planning to move there.

Well buddy, don't know know what to tell you. It works for me each and every time. I get at least 50 minutes when i call a cell phone and believe it or not, i get 1.5 hours when i call a cell beginning with the digits 96# or 35#...I guess the company views them as land lines.

For calling cards always ask for the new ones that come out they tend to have more minutes than the old ones. If you are living in the Tri-State area than you have no problem getting good cards for a good rate.
New card good with minutes to DR is called (DSA CARRIBBEAN NY) It has like 2.5 hours for $5 US and 50min for cell phones, $2 card 1 hour of talk time, the thing about these cards you have to dial through a NY phone #.

Here are some ideas on the calling thang to and from the DR.

From the DR: US Verizon Cell phone service. In the DR a Verizon phone works just like it was in Miami. No 1 plus area code calling necessary (roaming) - just area and number. Incoming and outgoing calls all work. SMS does not.

To the DR: Check out a Voice over IP solution called skype www.skype.com. the cost is like 7 cents per minute. No connection fees and the timer seems to be accurate. There are no membership or monthly fees. You can buy 10 euro or 25 euro blocks of time and use it to call any where

If you have Internet access with your lap top (or from a cafe) in the DR and headphones you could call back to the US. Software has to be down loaded to the hard drive.

One last idea while my propeller is spinning, www.gotomypc.com is a service for fee that enables you to connect to your home and/or office PC from any on-line PC from any where. This can be a good thing to support virtual work environments.

I tried www.multiphone.net for a while put their network is shitty. I would have intermittent problems trying to connect. And they charge you sells tax even if you don't live in FL.

The problem with vonage, skype, and the other VoIP solutions is that you need a broadband connection to use them. So I guees you will be in Rocky's waiting for a computer and hoping nobody downloading porn hogging all the bandwidth.
