Yorman Vasquez, the former director of the Department of Frontier Development was paid RD$250,000 in cash and a check for RD$50,000 to facilitate the dispatch of a load of merchandise from the Customs area, supposedly for the frontier under Law 28-01.
He said that he distributed the money to needy people along the frontier. The Department for the Prevention of Corruption did not believe him, and neither did the judge who sentenced him to three years in jail. The activities of Yorman Vasquez were contained in a complaint filed by Customs director Miguel Cocco. Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito said that this was the latest piece of evidence of the steps that the authorities are taking against fraud.
