Diario Libre Reporter Aianny Mendez interviewed General Jose Fernandez Fadul, the director of the Metropolitan Transit Authority, (AMET) to get his opinion on several matters regarding the traffic situation in Santo Domingo and AMET in general. Basically, the General does not have a very high opinion of the traffic courts, which he says are too lenient on offenders. Also coming out of the interview is the very important warning to the 90,000 offenders who have received summons for traffic offences and have not come forth to pay their fines or face the court. He said that AMET would shortly start cross checking their information with computers in the Ministry of Public Works, the National Police, the Department of Immigration, Internal Revenue, and the Passport office. Fernandez said that he needs 1,000 men and women to take care of Santo Domingo but that he only has 600 at the present time. This traffic patrol squad hands out 1,400 summonses a day in Santo Domingo, 170 for running red lights alone. The General was also very proud of the fact that all his officers are high school graduates and despite the fact that they are often accused of being abusive at times, they are never accused of taking bribes. Fernandez Fadul said that if an agent is offered a bribe to look the other way, the offender is brought before the General, and the officer is given a prize equal to the bribe he was offered.
