Minister of the Interior and the Police Franklin Almeyda has announced the recruitment of 15,000 new police officers, starting with a group of 5,000. The program to provide the police with these new recruits comes from the minister's complaint that while there are 32,000 policemen on the payroll, there are only 3,000 available for patrols. Police Chief Bernardo Santana Paez told Hoy reporters that the new recruits would be paid more than what current police are receiving and that older members of the force will receive compensation for their service.
