Over 178,000 Dominican schoolchildren and some adults will begin to undergo the rigors of the National Examinations this Tuesday. These are the eighth grade and third cycle of adult education students from all Dominican schools, both public and private. On 11 July, there are 126,000 high school graduates scheduled for their real final examinations. Without a passing grade in these tests, a high school graduate cannot enter any officially recognized university level institution, and does not receive a certificate of successfully finishing high school.
It is interesting to note that not all eighth grade or adult education students or high school seniors are eligible for these examinations. In fact, of the 167,000 fourth year high school students, only 68.23% have been called for the exams.
