There have been 37 constitutional reforms during the Dominican Republic's 162-year history. These reforms have been carried out by at least 14 different governments, and six of these governments have carried out multiple reforms: under Joaquin Balaguer, Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina, Horacio Vasquez, Ramon Caceres, Buenaventura Baez and Pedro Santana. The latest constitutional reform was carried out by the Hipolito Mejia administration, in 2002. The previous reform was in 1994 when then President Balaguer oversaw Constitutional changes. President Leonel Fernandez has announced his interest to reform the Constitution. The ruling party will be majority in Congress as of 16 August 2006.
