The Dominican Institute of Telecommunications (Indotel) has announced that it has authorized concessions to several companies to operate Wi Max technology. Wi Max is described as the next generation of WiFi, or Wireless networking technology that connects users to the Internet at faster speeds and from much longer ranges than current wireless technology allows.
In an interview with Hoy newspaper INDOTEL director Jose Rafael Vargas also announced that portability would generate price wars as telecom companies strive to maintain or attract users. The number portability technology allows users to switch telephone service providers within the same geographic area and keep their existing phone number. It is a requirement under the DR-CAFTA treaty. Vargas said that the measure would be in effect before the end of the year, but that it could take several months longer as companies adapt to offer the new technology.
