Agustin Carstens, deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has praised the progress made within the proposals of the Letter of Intent, but he urged the elimination of some negative factors that were impeding the DR's development.

Carstens gave his talk at the meeting in Punta Cana of the V Annual Regional Conference on Central America, Panama and the Dominican Republic. Finance ministers, central bank managers and banking supervisors from the region attended the meeting. According to Carstens, the IMF is pleased with what has been done so far, but that the country must continue to guarantee the fiscal stability of the nation's economy and be more proactive in addressing the electricity problem, which remains an important obstacle to development. "It is propitious to have this year's conference in the Dominican Republic, where economic performance has been particularly strong, with high real GDP growth and low inflation, reflecting the steadfast implementation of the authorities' economic program, which the Fund has supported with a Stand-By Arrangement," he stated.
