The Dominican Republic was supposed to enter DR-CAFTA over the weekend, but the starting date (1 July) came and went with no announcement and no alternative date set. The Agro-Business Board (JAD) is looking to introduce important adjustments to improve the production of rice, milk, garlic, sugar and beans. However, the JAD is also of the opinion that organic farm products are a better option for competing within the confines of DR-CAFTA. According to an article in Listin Diario, the DR can compete with 35 products, including services. Some experts that the farming sector is in the best position to compete, with such articles as mangos, avocados, papayas, organic bananas, greenhouse vegetables, bell peppers, savory peppers, poultry, eggs, organic cacao and coffee, tobacco, onions and processed meats and sausages. However, the JAD also says that important steps must be taken to allow producers of these items to compete in the DR-CAFTA marketplace.

The agreement is already in effect in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Pending for implementation are the DR and Costa Rica.
